KU Campanile Tower Restoration – Lawrence, KS

Building History
The KU Campanile Tower stands as a solemn and enduring memorial honoring the 277 University of Kansas students, alumni, and faculty members who lost their lives during World War II. Located at the heart of campus, the tower serves as a prominent focal point for remembrance, hosting carillon concerts, memorial services, and ceremonial gatherings throughout the year. As both a historic structure and a place of reflection, preserving the Campanile’s integrity is essential to maintaining its role on campus.

Scope of Work
Years of exposure to the elements had led to significant deterioration of the tower’s exterior, prompting the need for comprehensive restoration. Mid-Continental Restoration was tasked with addressing both structural and aesthetic concerns while preserving the historic character of the memorial. The project scope included:

  • Removal and replacement of the deteriorated rooftop
  • Cleaning, removal, and replacement of damaged limestone
  • Thorough façade washing using a gentle biological growth cleaning agent

Challenges and Solutions
One of the primary challenges was ensuring that replacement limestone seamlessly matched the original material. Prior to removal, the restoration team carefully evaluated the extent of deterioration and documented existing stone conditions. This process ensured that new limestone matched the original in color, texture, and profile, maintaining the visual and historical continuity of the tower.

Additionally, cleaning the façade required a delicate approach to avoid damaging historic masonry. A non-abrasive, biological growth cleaning solution was used to safely restore the limestone’s appearance while protecting its long-term durability.

Results
Following the completion of restoration efforts, the KU Campanile Tower now stands revitalized and structurally sound, continuing its role as a powerful symbol of remembrance. The renewed facade and rooftop ensure the tower’s longevity while honoring its original design and purpose. Through careful craftsmanship and attention to detail, this historic memorial has been preserved for future generations to gather, reflect, and remember.
