Oklahoma Baptist University – Shawnee Hall
Building History
Shawnee Hall, constructed in 1915, holds historical significance as the first structure built on the campus of Oklahoma Baptist University. For over a century, it has served as an academic cornerstone of the university. In 2023, the hall sustained substantial damage when an EF-2 tornado swept through the city of Shawnee, leaving the historic building in need of both structural and aesthetic restoration.
Scope of Work
Mid-Continental Restoration, in a joint venture between its Restoration and New-Masonry divisions, was contracted to perform a comprehensive restoration of both the interior and exterior of Shawnee Hall. Exterior work includes detailed cleaning of the brick and limestone facade, widespread tuckpointing, and extensive brick repair and replacement. The project also involves structural repairs and updates within the building to preserve its historic character while ensuring long-term integrity.
Challenges and Solutions
Restoring a century-old structure following tornado damage presents unique challenges—especially when preserving historical elements is a priority. The MCR team worked meticulously to match replacement materials with the building’s original brick and limestone, ensuring visual consistency across the facade. Working in tandem with campus operations, careful coordination minimized disruption to daily university life. The dual-division approach between Restoration and New-Masonry allowed the team to manage both delicate repairs and structural needs with precision and efficiency.
Results
Upon completion in summer 2025, Shawnee Hall will stand fully restored, with its architectural character preserved and its structural resilience significantly improved. Mid-Continental’s craftsmanship ensures that this iconic building will continue to serve the OBU campus for generations to come—honoring its past while preparing it for the future.
