Allen Field House at the University of Kansas
Allen Fieldhouse, located in Lawrence, Kansas, is an iconic venue in college basketball and home to the University of Kansas Jayhawks. Built in 1955, it has witnessed decades of historic moments and championships. Over time, exposure to the elements led to weathering and dirt accumulation, necessitating a comprehensive restoration to preserve the building’s integrity and legacy.
Scope of Work
Mid-Continental Restoration was entrusted with restoring the limestone facade to its former glory. The project involved:
- Application of a biological growth cleaning agent, followed by neutralization and thorough rinsing.
- 100% repointing of mortar joints, addressing significant deterioration.
- Sealant replacement to enhance facade durability.
Challenges and Solutions
The project presented unique challenges:
- Heavy Dirt Accumulation: The West elevation faced particularly severe dirt buildup, requiring careful cleaning to avoid damage to the delicate limestone.
- Delicate Skylights: Extra precautions were necessary to protect the skylights while cleaning and restoring nearby surfaces.
- Active Facility: Allen Fieldhouse remained operational throughout the restoration, requiring extensive coordination with the university to minimize disruptions.
Mid-Continental’s experienced team developed tailored cleaning techniques and implemented detailed project scheduling to overcome these challenges effectively.
Results
The restoration brightened and rejuvenated the limestone facade, enhancing the building’s visual appeal while preserving its structural integrity. Allen Fieldhouse now stands restored and ready to host future championships, a testament to its enduring legacy in college basketball history.
